Do you dream of flying to the skies and getting the best office view from the Captain’s cockpit?

A Commercial Pilot License will help you get there. And the first big hurdle? Clearing the CPL exam, conducted by the DGCA. Yes, taking a first look at the entire syllabus might seem daunting at first. But don’t worry, we’re here to break it down for you and help you navigate through the course.

DGCA CPL Exam Syllabus

Now is the high time to take your aviation dream seriously. The aviation industry in India is booming right now. Naturally, the demand for commercial pilots is skyrocketing. The Indian aviation industry will need around 30,000 pilots in 15 to 20 years. So, if you had been waiting for a divine sign to take your aviation dream seriously, this is it.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) conducts the CPL or Commercial Pilot License exam covering six topics – Air Navigation, Air Regulations, Aviation Meteorology, Technical General, Technical Specific, and Radio Telephony Restricted.

Let’s take a detailed look at the syllabus of the DGCA CPL examination.

These topics are taught in ground classes. After you pass the ground school, you have to meet the flying hours requirement.

DGCA CPL Examination Subjects (2026)

The subjects cover the theoretical foundation of CPL. These subjects are essential for understanding foundational knowledge in aviation. Consider the ground classes to train your brain, while the flying training is for building muscle memory.

Here is a quick look at the subjects you will be studying in the ground school:

SubjectsKey Concepts
Air NavigationFlight planning, calculating time, speed, and distance, dead reckoning (DR) navigation, using aeronautical charts, radio navigation aids, usage of a flight computer (E6B), etc.
Air RegulationsRules of DGCA, ICAO regulations, procedures of air traffic service, aviation license, VFR and IFR regulations, responsibilities of a pilot, and regulations, etc.
Aviation MeteorologyLayers of atmosphere, pressure systems, clouds and precipitation, interpreting METAR and TAF, wind shear, icing, turbulence, etc.
Technical GeneralBasics of aerodynamics, aircraft engines & aircraft instruments, electrical systems, performance of aircraft, and its limitations.
Technical SpecificTechnical aspects of specific aircraft, its limitations, emergency procedures, performance charts, and knowledge of aircraft handling.
Radio Telephony RestrictedAviation phraseology, the procedure of radio communication, emergency communication procedures, distress signals, frequency management, etc.

Table 1: Subjects of DGCA CPL Examinations

1. Air Navigation

Ever wonder how pilots navigate across oceans, thousands of feet above the clouds? And that too without using Google Maps? This subject will teach you that.

Time zones, latitudes & longitude- You learn to use coordinates, calculate the local and universal time to determine the landing and take-off time between time zones.

Navigation Aids (NAVAIDs)- Stay on the course of your flight using radio-based systems like DME, VOR, GPS, DME, etc, devices, especially during the time of low-visibility.

Dead Reckoning (DR)- Determine your position using data on aircraft speed, direction, and time when you cannot access other tools.

2. Air Regulations

Here, you learn about DGCA rules and ICAO regulations, which you must follow when flying nationally and internationally.

Topics to learn:

Rules of DGCA and ICAO- Follow Indian aviation rules and also the international aviation laws.

Licensing- Get CPL and medical fitness certifications

Classification of Airspace- Get a basic understanding of airspace classification, and how you should operate your aircraft in different airspaces

3. Aviation Meteorology

In this topic, you learn how the weather and different atmospheric elements impact your flight.

Topics to learn:

Layers of Atmosphere- Different layers of atmosphere and how they influence the flight

Clouds and weather patterns- Identify the types of clouds and learn about pressure systems

Visibility and forecasting- The impact of weather conditions on flight take-offs, landings, and cruising.

4. Technical General

It offers a complete understanding of the design of aircraft, components, and teaches you how it functions.

Topics to learn:

Flight principles- The correlation among lift, drag, thrust, and weight

Airframe and control surface- You learn about the structural integrity of aircraft, its manoeuvrability, performance optimization, etc.

Engines- How the piston and jet engines work and ways to monitor them

5. Technical Specific

You learn all about the specific aircraft you train on, for example, the Cessna 172 or Diamond DA-42.

Topics to learn:

Specific Systems and Limitations of Aircraft- Learn about the fuel system, flaps, landing gear, and maximum speed limitations, weight, fuel capacity, or engine limits.

Checklists and procedures- Emergency and normal checklists, specific to the aircraft.

6. Radio Telephony Restricted

This subject prepares you for clear and accurate communication with Air Traffic Control (ATC).

Topics to learn:

Aviation phraseology and communication rules- Use standard ICAO-English, and communicate during taxi, takeoff, cruise, etc.

Clear communication- You learn to use specific frequencies and a specific call sign* when communicating with ATCs.

*Call signs are unique identifiers for each aircraft.

CPL Flying Training

DGCA CPL Exam

The DGCA requires you to have at least 200 hours of flying experience to become a commercial pilot. Here is a breakdown of flying hours:

Flying TypeTotal Hours
Total Flying Time200
Pilot-in-Command (PIC)100
Cross Country as PIC20
Instrument Flying10
Night Flying5

Table 1: Flying Hour Requirement for CPL

In case you possess a Commercial Pilot’s Licence (Helicopters)/Airline Transport Pilot’s License (Helicopters) and have completed satisfactorily 1000 hours of flying as PIC, the 200 flight hours requirement will be reduced to 100 hours.

CPL Exam Pattern

The CPL exam is an online, computer-based test, with MCQ-type questions.

Mode- Online computer-based test

Duration- 2 to 3 hours each subject

Question type- Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)

Passing Marks- 70% marks for all subjects, except RTR (50% marks, WPC conducts it separately)

Attempt- Unlimited

Exam Preparation Tips for DGCA CPL

Learning all the theoretical parts might seem intimidating, but don’t panic. All the pilots have passed these hurdles. Here are some tips to help you out:

Clear Your Doubts

Understand the theoretical concepts of the theoretical parts of the subjects and clear your doubts with instructors. Understanding the concept is better than memorizing it.

Follow a Study Schedule

Set weekly goals for all subjects and revise regularly.

Practice Previous Years’ Questions

Previous years’ questions will give you an idea of the question types.

Give Mock Tests

Practice mock tests within the time limits of exams. It will mentally prepare you for the exam.

Wrapping Up

To become a commercial pilot in India, you will have to pass the theoretical examination of six subjects. Besides, you must have enough flying experience to get the Commercial Pilot License. With a minimum of 200 hours of flying experience (that should include flying as PIC, cross-country, night flying, etc.). Successfully overcoming these hurdles will earn you the desired commercial pilot license.
